What to Consider When Looking for a Renovation Contractor

Renovating your home or apartment can be an exciting experience, but it can also be a daunting project if you are not sure where to start. The first thing you will want to do is hire a renovation contractor. However, even that task can seem challenging. There can be so many options with people giving you lots of different options and opinions.

We are here to help! We have created some tips to help guide you in this process.

Tip #1: Shop Around

Do not just pick a company because they have the most commercials, or you see the most ads for them. Talk to your family and friends. See who they have used and if they liked them. The more people you talk to the more options you will have to pick from. You will also be able to eliminate some contractors based on feedback from family and friends. Another good place to look is at their online reviews. People on the internet tend to be blatantly honest, so this is a good place to get uncensored feedback.

Tip #2: Interview Multiple Contractors

Getting referrals and feedback from people is great, but you need to interview your renovation contractor candidates. By interviewing them you get a feel for who they are and how you guys will work together. It is important to pick someone you are comfortable working with. This project is your baby and if you are not comfortable communicating your needs with your contractor it can turn into a disaster really quick.

Tip #3: Review Candidates Portfolios

Make sure you check out each renovation contractor’s portfolio. By doing this it can help you understand what their style is and if they have the range to take on the project you are looking to do.

Tip #4: Ask for Detailed Quotes

Price is not everything, however you should get an estimate of how much a project will cost and what is included so that you are sure to be on the same page with your contractor. You do not want to start a project just to have it go way over budget or not get everything done as you had envisioned. We also recommend that you do not go with a renovation contractor just because they have the lowest price.

Tip #5: Double Check References

Make sure to ask each renovation contractor candidate for references. Once you have these references make sure you contact them! Ask them about their experience working with the contractor as well as the proposal/quote process. Also make sure to ask what went well and what could have been improved on. For example, if the project went way over budget or if they contractor communicated with the client poorly that is important information to know.

Tip #6: Determine If They Are Reputable

Lastly, when looking for a renovation contractor make sure they are reputable. They should have a contact card with a permanent mailing address, phone number, and email address. Are they on review websites such as Yelp or Angie’s List? Do they have a website and business social media accounts, such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Are most comments positive? All of this information helps you see if a contractor is well established in the community. Also, make sure they have the proper insurance, so you are not liable for incidents that may happen on a project at your home/apartment.

When looking for your next renovation contractor use these tips to help guide you in the process and to ensure you have the best experience and outcome with your renovation project.
